HIGHLIGHTS of ASIA
Asia was my introduction to the wider world.
- In 2008, I moved my 15-year-old twins and my 20-year-old daughter to Seoul, South Korea, to teach at Seoul Foreign School—my very first international adventure. I was immersed in intricately designed and vividly painted pagodas, the constant energy of a crowded city, and the daily challenge of navigating the Korean language. Our days often ended hiking the mountain behind the school, discovering countless routes to the summit.
- In June 2009, I took my first solo trip—three weeks, no itinerary, no cell phone—through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Ignorant bravery at its finest. I walked into tourist shops and signed up for multi-day adventures, hiked out of Chiang Mai, and hired Jimbo, a tuk-tuk driver turned tour guide, for three unforgettable days exploring Angkor Wat.
- Later came a long bike journey through Japan—hundreds of miles through pristine rice paddies and quiet countryside. I embraced the culture of onsens, donned a yukata for exquisite multi-course dinners, and slept on tatami mats in traditional inns.
- I was deeply shaken by the atrocities inflicted on the people of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, yet profoundly moved by how warmly I was welcomed. I rode in traditional boats steered by women through jungle waterways, descended into hidden tunnel cities, and witnessed resilience firsthand.
- I hunted, cooked, and ate a local delicacy—a tarantula. Crunchy, indeed. I joined unique food tours by tuk-tuk and motorcycle, discovering flavors as bold as the journeys themselves.
Asia changed me. These moments marked the beginning of a lifelong love for travel, curiosity, and stepping bravely into the unknown.
